We had a great Fourth of July weekend in Des Moines! Thursday night, we drove up to the State Capitol grounds for what is touted as Iowa's "best" fireworks. 
The evening was perfect and it was a beautiful view from atop Capitol hill...and while I enjoyed the orchestra and Broadway show tunes that went on for about two hours before the fireworks actually began, it was a little long for the attention spans of a four year old, a two year old, and even a 33 year old husband!
However, the fireworks were beautiful, especially with the downtown skyline in the background. Unfortunately, the batteries in both cameras died shortly after we turned them on, so photos from our night out are limited!
Friday evening, we took the kids to a Des Moines Menace Soccer game, which also ended with fireworks! This was a better choice for the kids since there were less people, they could wander around more, and we were home by 10pm (versus midnight the night before). They even have a kid's section with a large inflatable bounce house and slide! We may have to hit another soccer game while we're out here!
Monday, my friend Sarah and her one-year-old Cameron arrived, and we're excited to spend a few days with them before the five of us (Sarah, Cameron, Alexa, Brody, and me) hit the road to head back to Texas on a three day road trip! (no, I'm not sure what we were thinking when we thought the road trip would be fun with three kids under the age of four, but we're willing to try anything once!!)
We plan to visit friends along the way and should arrive in Houston on the 12th. The kids and I will stay with my parents until the 18th, then we'll all drive back up to Iowa in the motor home. My niece, Haylee, and my grandparents are also making the trip, so we'll have a house-full for almost two weeks - I can't wait!!
